 possibility of knighthood, or in
Marian's case, damehood ( is that a word?)for Shearing and McPartland.>

Hi, ummm...well. I dont think it would get my vote( not that anyone would
ask me). I wouldn`t have given it to Jagger either and several medals were
returned in disgust when the Beatles got theirs.
Unfortunately some years ago there was a move to widen the scope of the
recipients, the general `keep the serfs happy` tendency which governments
employ to bolster their popularity.
Until then gongs were given for something solid. My father received an MBE
(I think) for working on the local Council for around 25 years and being
Mayor about 9 times, all unpaid and voluntary. Now, some gong is given to
whoever is in the limelight at the moment. Hence calls for an honour for the
guy who scored the winning dropkick in the Rugby Championships and brought
England out as top dog.
Giving honours to people who get highly paid for just doing their job
shouldn`t figure. It should be a recognition of something above and beyond
the, usually unsung, call of duty.
No doubt others in these island will disagree. Please abuse me off list.

Cheers

Pat
