In reply to the charge that George Shearing could play only chocolate box
music Steve Barbone said :

"Hey Pat, aren't you simply relaying a story about YOUNG George Shearing
before he
became famous. Not whether Shearing is now a good, great, or not so great.
Or am I
missing something?"

Somewhere (but where? Never move house unless you have to !!) I have an LP
entitled "The Young George Shearing" which illustrates beyond doubt that in
the early part of his solo recording career Shearing was one helluva fine
swing pianist whose playing had obviously been influenced by the likes of
Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson.

Chocolate box indeed - phooey !
