Composer Henry Mancini to Be on New Stamp

.c The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Henry Mancini, the composer of ``Moon River'' and music
for the ``Pink Panther'' movies, will be honored on a postage stamp next
year.

The design will show Mancini conducting while titles of his works appear to
scroll past on a screen behind him. It will be unveiled in Los Angeles on
Aug. 16.

``Henry Mancini's influence on the music industry has never been stronger,
and this stamp is a special way to pay tribute to his enduring genius,''
Postmaster General John Potter said Wednesday.

Mancini's work for the ``Peter Gunn'' series became the first jazz album to
sell more than a million copies. It won two Grammys.

From the 1950s to the early 1990s, Mancini created scores for more than 70
films, including ``Moon River,'' the theme of ``Breakfast at Tiffany's'';
``The Pink Panther''; ``The Great Race''; and ``10.''

His television works included themes for ``Mr. Lucky,'' ``Newhart,''
``Remington Steele'' and ``Hotel.''

Mancini was born April 16, 1924, in Cleveland and was taught by his father
to play the piccolo. He attended New York's Juilliard School of Music on a
scholarship. At 18, Mancini was drafted into the Army Air Corps and
assigned to a military band.

After the war he became pianist for the reorganized Glenn Miller Orchestra
and later moved to California where he began composing for film and
television.
