I read you as saying the Man's playing is technically great but not creative
or inspirational. Maybe so, but there's a definite need for musicians of
his caliber and talent. He has produced instructional material and
transcriptions, and his Right Chord books, whether or not you like his
substitute changes, open the reader's mind to something beyond everyday
sheet music chords.
I've listened to him in person. Not a showman, he's like a live piano roll.
As a sideman on small group recordings, he certainly didn't seem to be
inhibiting the other players.
Originality is another issue. As Shearing once said, "A good copy is better
than a poor original".
