[Dixielandjazz] CD Royalties?

When we made a CD about 4 or 5 years ago, the rule was anything 75 years or
older was public domain.  After doing the research, we found about half the
tunes were indeed public domain, so did not pay the "license" on those
tunes.
     Yes, I do believe Harry Fox collects royalties where it is sometimes
not required by listing songs where only an arrangement of it still has a
valid copyright.  We figured if we don't play the arrangement, we're not
violating any copyright.  There was not a chart in sight at the recording
session, so I don't think we were playing anyone's special arrangements.  I
don't remember the exact amount, but after making all the calculations, I
believe we paid a few hundred bucks to Harry Fox.
