Dear Bob, Mike (and friends),
The lack of humour at US airports goes back a very LONG way.
I well recall a notice at San Francisco in 1975 advising against flippant and
humorous comments.
I do not remember the penalty, but it was a hefty US$ amount with possible
imprisonment.
We Aussies, with our notorious sense of the ridiculous, could only smile.
How times change!
On the other hand, in England at the same time (1975), a customs man gruffly
refused to stamp my tiny wife Jess's entry papers, because she was born in
Scotland and they did not let Scots back into the UK once they had left.
She was terrified for a moment, until she saw the twinkle in the big Scotsman's
eyes.
Kind regards,
Bill.
