I'm sorry to report that the fine trombonist, Clyde Cox, died of a heart
attack in Jacksonville, Alabama, last Friday.

Born in Mississippi, Clyde grew up with Mose Allison, played in big bands in
New York during the 50s and 60s. A compulsive practicer on his instrument,
often going at it 12 hours a day, he blew out his lip in the late 60s and
had to retire from professional music.

He enrolled in the PhD program in English Language and Literature at the
Univ. of Michigan, completed his PhD in 1972 and joined the English
department at Jacksonville where he rose to become head of the department,
then Dean of the University, from which position he retired in 1997.

Clyde Cox was a fine musician, very talented and very very intelligent. He
gave up music as a profession but never left it out of his life. He was a
good friend and knew OKOM, although he was always a modern player, with
Billy May and many other top bands. Ande even after he blew out his lip, he
could still manage 8 to 12 bars of the damnedest trombone you ever heard.

He leaves a grown son and daughter, and his wife, Shirley, whose address is:

                Shirley Cox
                809 9th av.
                Jacksonville , Alabama 36265

                Phone: (256) 435-7124

I'm gonna miss him.
Charlie
