The Canadian Brass tubist Chuck Daellenbach has always used a piston
valve horn every time I have seen them - I think one of the smaller
brass instrument companies has a "signature model" of his horn (but
that was a few years ago.) Their website is http://www.canbrass.com .
Other hot tubists (not necessarily OKOM) would have to include Bob
Stewart and Pat Sheridan - Stewart is not exactly a "screamer" but he
is super in long runs of swinging 8th notes and modern jazz flavors -
he works a lot with Howard Johnson in the 8 tuba group Gravity. Stewart
has recorded a few more OKOM style songs but that is not all that he
does.
Sheridan is a high ranging soloist in all sorts of styles with tons of
chops. Classical to modern brass band - excellent stuff!
From the past, I have always enjoyed Singleton Palmer's group - a great
OKOM tuba playing band leader!
Whenever I hear these guys (and a few other star tubists like Eli ) I
realize that I will probably forever be just a "good" player ... gotta
practice more ;-)
