I've tried several approaches to shelving LPs over the last forty years.
Particle board is cheap and easy to saw, but requires careful handling to
keep it from flaking, and it sags under the weight of the records. A lot of
the assemble-it-yourself shelving units are just particle board with a
plastic wood-grain pattern.

Next best is 3/4 inch wood planks.

The metal and/or plastic assemble-it-yourself units vary in
price-per-storage-foot and strength, and require bookends or props to keep
the records vertical.

I finally decided to build cubes, each 15 by 15 inches inside, using
standard 3/4 by twelve inch particle board. They are great. You can stack
them as high and wide as your space permits. They never sag, and you can
use them for records, books, or whatever. Since LPs should be stored
standing up, it's easy to keep them vertical without props. E-mail me if
you're interested in construction details.
