> ZAT YOU SANTA CLAUS?
>
> The holiday season is sneaking up on us. Thanksgiving is a week away,
strings of bright lights and decorations are beginning to appear in windows
around town, and yesterday you ran into your Aunt Martha, who told you that
she finished her holiday shopping in August at an outlet in Maine where
everything was on half price. But don't despair!
>
> We have three holiday gift-giving ideas that will keep you out of the mall
and in the safe comfort of your own living room. And, while you're buying
presents for friends and relatives, you'll also be supporting our programs
at the Louis Armstrong House & Archives.
>
> 1. Give a LAHA Membership to Your Favorite Jazz Fan
>
> A gift membership to the Louis Armstrong House & Archives is a
one-of-a-kind present and a great way to help us preserve the cultural
legacy of one of the world's most loved artists. Your gift includes a LAHA
T-shirt, a subscription to The Dippermouth News (our official newsletter),
invitations to exhibit openings, and much more! Go to
www.satchmo.net/membership to purchase LAHA gift memberships. During the
holiday season, we will include a special Louis Armstrong greeting card
indicating that the membership is a gift from you.
>
> 2. Use shopformuseums.com for Your Online Holiday Purchases
>
> It's simple: Go to www.shopformuseums.com where you will be asked to
select a museum. Choose the Louis Armstrong House & Archives from their
database, enter your e-mail address and password, click on a merchant, make
your purchase and the rest is automatic. You may choose from over 125
merchants offering a variety of brand-name products including Tower Records,
Amazon, Lands' End, Martha Stewart, J.Crew, Hallmark, Office Max,
1-800-FLOWERS, Sharper Image, Eddie Bauer, and many more. The Louis
Armstrong House & Archives will receive donations from 2% to 7% for each
transaction, at no cost to you.
>
> 3. Use satchmo.net for your Barnes & Noble purchases
>
> As an Affiliate Partner of Barnes & Noble, we receive a donation of 5% on
all purchases you make from "the world's largest bookstore." Books and music
always make great gifts. Barnes and Noble has more than 200
Armstrong-related books in stock, including the children's picture book of
"What a Wonderful World" and the new best seller, "Jazz Modernism: From
Ellington and Armstrong to Matisse and Joyce." You can also find hundreds of
Armstrong CD titles, from "The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings"
to "Christmas Through the Years," which features Armstrong's reading of "The
Night Before Christmas" (his final recording). More than a dozen Armstrong
DVD and videos are also available. We receive 5% of all your Barnes and
Noble online purchases, as long as you remember to enter the Barnes & Noble
website from our website www.satchmo.net.
>
> All of us at the Louis Armstrong House & Archives are grateful for your
support during this season of giving, and we wish you and your loved ones a
safe and healthy holiday.
>
>
> AND THE WINNER IS... "West End Blues"
>
> In the last issue of e-Pops (October 11, 2002) we told you about our
participation in the New York City CultureFest, where we asked visitors to
vote for their favorite Louis Armstrong song. We were not surprised to see
that "What a Wonderful World" came in first place. We then asked our e-Pops
subscribers to vote for their favorite Satchmo tune, and the result of this
vote has now been tallied.
>
> Taking into account that the average e-Pops reader is a more ardent
Armstrong fan than a casual visitor, it was interesting to note that "West
End Blues" crushed all competition. This song, considered perhaps a little
more complex and "meatier" than the very popular "What a Wonderful World"
received twice as many votes as the second-place winner, which was an even
split between "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," "Struttin' With Some Barbeque,"
and "What a Wonderful World." Fifth place went to "Potato Head Blues."
Thanks to all our readers who voted and shared their opinions.
