Respectfully, I disagree, MIke. Morton devotees will be wasting their
money on this book. I read it when it ran in the Chicago Tribune and it is
full of errors, defamation, false claims among other things. Persons
associated with Morton are seriously maligned in this book. The principle
writer of this book, Howard Reich, has an agenda...to promote himself as a
'serious jazz scholar and researcher who through his own diligent work has
uncovered vital new information on Jelly Roll Morton.' He uses a number of
reliable sources but does not acknowledge them in any way and he tries to
demean others who have studied and written on Morton. Morton's associates,
busines and/or musical are portrayed as evil swindlers ripping off a black
musical genius. Perhaps, Reich, purged this book of some of the more
defamatory stuff that was in the Tribune article, but I doubt it.
