Folks--
Speaking of Billy Maxted, in rereading _Emperor Norton's Hunch_
(The Story of Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band), i noticed that the
author (John Buchanan) mentions that during World War II Lu was
stationed for a time in Honolulu and was put in charge of a big band,
even though his position was First Class Aviation Mechanist's Mate.
"The band consisted of a mixture of amateurs and professionals which
strangely enough, proved very successful." "The drummer in the band,
and one of those officers, somehow acquired some of Benny Goodman's
big band arrangements and Lu reworked them for the band. Another
officer, one of the piano players, was Billy Maxted...."
