The tailgate designation came about from the practice in New Orleans of  =
sitting the trombonist at the back of horse drawn wagons carrying bands =
so that the slide could be moved without knocking fellow band members =
off the truck. These truck borne bands were used to advertise stores, =
dances, concerts, anything. 'Bucking' (cutting) contests between bands =
took place when two wagons met and fans of both outfits tied their =
wheels together to see which band could outblow the other. It could be =
that 'Kings' were borne this way - King Bolden - King Oliver etc.
