Hey Jim;

Actually you're not too far off base (bass) with your hammer comment. I too
own a Czech Tuba (5-valve CC) and on more than one occasion have had to
borrow various tools from the drummer on the band to un-stick a stuck valve.
I've found placing a drumstick on the hub nut of the valve just as it's
coming out of the valve housing and giving it a sharp tap with a mallet
usually frees up the valve. Make sure that when you strike the stick that
the trajectory is moving in the direction that the valve moves, this will
prevent wreckage to the valve. Once the valve is free moving make sure to
keep it lubricated with a good grade of valve oil to prevent another
occurrence.

Hope this helps out!

My old Czech 4-valve rotary Tuba has a stuck first rotary valve. I've
tried everything. Even the repairman couldn't find the reason why it is
sticking, and I don't really want to take it back to him again because
it will cost a mint this time. Any suggestions as to what might be the
problem? It only seems to stick after its been played for a hour or so.

Randy Millan

Give it a good solid whack with a hammer. Usually takes care of the
problem with one whack. Or do the decent thing and toss it into the nearest
dumpster.
