   Here is one more possible definition.
   When I was a kid living in a little "cow-town" in the state of Washington
during prohibition, if a person needed a drink all they had to do was call
their friendly neighborhood Taxi and have then deliver a dozen eggs or a
pound of butter or a loaf of bread and if the driver knew you he would
deliver a bottle of gin, scotch, rum or whatever. Since the Canadian border
isn't that far away it wasn't too difficult for the "taxi" people.
   Obviously the "butter & egg" men were some of the more affluent people
around town and some of their customers used the tried and true barter
system.
   Just one more possible explanation.
