On the Jazz Institute of Chicago's web site is the following:
The Language of Jazz
An American Legacy
Reviewed by David Simpson who talks about the Random House Dictionary of
American Slang. The below excerpt comes from that writing in the mid
1990s I believe.
"According to fellow musicians, Louis (Armstrong) helped popularize
quite a number of terms from "chops" (for lips) and "chick" (a young
women) to "gage" and "reefer" (his usual epithets for marijuana)."
"Barbecue" (a sexy woman) as in "Struttin With Some Barbecue" and
"butter and egg man" (a dairy farmer or bumpkin who fancies himself as
an urban high roller) are two slang expressions particularly associated
with Armstrong's music." . . . .
According to the same writer, "Jelly Roll" was Morton's term for that
part of the female anatomy which others attribute to "Barbecue".
No doubt the double entendre of many jazz terms is difficult to get
exactly right, having been obscured by the fog of time and the varied
uses by many musos and fans during the last 100 years. Suffice it to say
that jazz and the language of jazz are sexy. That's what keeps us sexy
senior jazz musos going.
Cheers,
