Reminds me of a story about an Olivetti VP, after they had bought
Underwood in the US (1962). I left jazz for a day gig with them and
toured the USA with Olivetti execs, talking with and looking over what
was left of Underwood. Took about 12 weeks.
At a company dinner one night, the new Managing Director of Olivetti USA
described his impression of the extended trip to me thusly; (please add
an Italian accent in your mind)
"When I came here to see the people at Underwood, in every city they
said to me things would be fine, if they would only let us do our thing"
or "If They weren't so stupid" of if "They" etc., with a litany of dumb
things that "they" did. And "They were stupid SOBs" etc.
Then he turned to me and opined: "Barbone, you know what?" he said
circling his arm around to include everyone in the room than raising
them as if in Papal blessing "We Arrre Da Day)
Same thing applies to the DJML. "We are the They".
Cheers,
