How about the famous chicago bluesman, Blind Orange Lemon.
Years back Don Demichael was the Editor of Downbeat Magazine, based in
chicago. Don was also a fine jazz drummer and vibist. During those days, it
seemed like every other black guy in chicago was trying to pass himself off
as a 'blues singer.' The Downbeat office was a magnet for these guys seeking
publicity. Don got so fed up with these phonies that he created a fictious
Blues singer, whom he named Blind Orange Lemon. He started printing items
about Blind Orange Lemon in each monthly issue of Downbeat... BOL was
appearing at such and such a club, BOL's new recording was coming out
etc.,etc. Eventually Don DeMichael tired of this bit and stopped printing
these bogus items. Sure enough, people started writing and calling the Down
Beat office asking for news of Blind Orange Lemon. Don and Downbeat never
did own up publicly to this farce but jazz musicians who knew Don knew about
it.
Any of you out there ever catch Blind Orange Lemon in person?
