Every Friday, the NY Times lists "important" jazz venues offerings for
the weekend in NY City. There are usually about 20 listings and today,
the following were of interest:

First the Louis Armstrong Tributes: Admittedly these are by "modern"
jazz players, but how many of us OKEMers are doing Armstrong Tributes
this year? Barbone Street is doing an Aug. 2,3 Birthday Bash tribute at
Sydney's Jazz Club in Rehoboth Beach and does several tributes to Pops
every year. We don't intend to cede the birth date tributes to the
modernists, nor have them tout it as Aug. 6. (It was Aug. 4, no?)

"TRIBUTES TO LOUIS ARMSTRONG," Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street,
Manhattan, (212) 576-2232. In honor of
Armstrong's oft-celebrated birthday on July 4 (if not his real one on
Aug. 6), the jazz-and-barbecue club is presenting a series of
new trumpeters, who may perform either glancing or full-scale homages to
the master. In any case, they're a talented crew. Tonight
is Jeremy Pelt, the newest of the high-level trumpet players in
straight-ahead jazz, with great technique as well as the imagination to
make art with it; tomorrow and Sunday, it's Brian Lynch, another fiery
musician, who has been pursuing a dual career of Latin jazz
and jazz proper. Tonight through Sunday night are at 7:30 and 9:30, with
an 11:30 set tonight and tomorrow; cover charge is $20
tonight and tomorrow, $15 on Sunday"

Also noted the below instrumentation as part of another jazz band
listing. Perhaps Bill Gunter could lead the washboard and banjo players
via these instrunents in new OKOM directions? Just kidding. ;-)

"Ikue Mori on laptop computer, D.J. Olive on turntables, Jamie Saft on
distorted electric piano,"

Cheers by laptop from New York City, the jazz capitol of the world.
