Someone else mentioned the Zenith Jazz Band. One of my favorite moments
in jazz was in 1999, when the band was performing for us at the Napa
Valley club. Bob Helm and Earl Scheelar took a 3 chorus duet on
"Oriental Man" and just about blew me (and I think everybody else) away
on the two clarinets.
I am truly sorry about Bob's current state of health, and wish him all
the best. I consider him to be one of the finest and most enduring
treasures of the San Francisco traditional jazz scene. Not only has he
played and recorded with so many fine bands, but his historical
contributions and memories of the early days have given us all so much!
