here is jimmy la rocca himself explaining his father way of playing his
cornet.
TO LUIS FLORES--ARGENTINA:
: NICK LAROCCA HELD HIS CORNET WITH HIS RIGHT HAND AND FINGERED THE VALVES
WITH HIS LEFT HAND. THE FINGERING OF THE INSTRUMENT IS DONE THE SAME WAY
ONLY USING HIS LEFT HAND......AS FOR BIX I CAN'T ANSWER, I BELEIVE BIX WAS
RIGHT HANDED AND FINGERED THE INSTRUMENT WITH HIS RIGHT HAND.
NICK LAROCCA WAS AMONG A VERY FEW THAT PLAYED THE CORNET LEFT HANDED, BEING
SELF TAUGHT HE MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN THERE WAS A RIGHT WAY AND A WRONG WAY TO
HOLD THE (CORNET) INSTRUMENT......
HIS FATHER WAS ALSO A CORNET PLAYER BUT DID NOT WAN'T HIS SON TO BE A
MUSICIAN.......
A LITTLE FOOT NOTE----NICK LAROCCA WAS CONCIDERED TO BE LEFT HANDED, BUT
WROTE WITH HIS RIGHT HAND--HE WAS "AMBIDEXTROUS"....HE COULD USE EITHER HAND
TO DO A TASK, BUT PLAYED THE CORNET ONLY WITH HIS LEFT HAND.......
