PRESS RELEASE
LONG WEEKEND 2002
Clevedon's 10th Annual Jazz Festival
With less than 2 weeks to go, Clevedon's 10th Annual Jazz Festival - three
days of some the finest jazz around - seems set to be as good as in
previous years. Advance tickets are selling well. Postal sales have been
brisk from those unable to get into town and those who can, can still get
to CLIC where tickets are still on sale - but going fast!
Shades of Shearing play at the Walton Park from 8pm on Friday 30th August
at the Walton Park Hotel. Four outstanding, Devon based musicians play
tribute to the music of George Shearing - the English jazz musician who,
with his quintet, took America by storm just after WW2 with such beautiful
compositions as 'Lullaby of Birdland' and 'September in the Rain'. Led by
drummer Denny Hutchinson this band is outstanding.
Saturday morning, local Clevedon company AMPEP sponsor the traditional
outdoor 'Shoppers Concert' in the Triangle Piazza. This year Mike Cooper's
Bristol based Excelsior Jazz Band perform their own brand of Traditional
Jazz from 10.30am. Saturday Evening the fun moves to Princes Hall where,
from 7pm virtuoso guitarist Tony Oreshko's trio pave the way for the Star
of the weekend - Georg Melly who, ably backed by John Chilton's
Feetwarmers, performs as only he can with a few tales and even more songs.
George was a big hit last time he visited Clevedon and Clevedon Jazz Club
is looking forward to this visit.
Sunday morning the Pier Trust sponsor the by now regular 'End of the Pier
Show' from 11am with The Blue Notes, joined as usual by Henry Davis and
John Gill. The weekend ends as it begins - at the Walton Park Hotel where,
at 8pm John Burnett's Jazz Bandits take the stage. And if previous
performances we've seen are anything to go by take it they do - by storm!
This is one of the finest British Trad Bands on the UK Club and Festival
circuit. 'A band not to be missed' said organiser Trevor Tomasin.
Advance tickets for the whole event or any day can be had in advance, in
person, from CLIC in Old Street Clevedon or by 'phoning Trev on 01275
343210. Any surplus tickets will be available 'on the door, on the day'.
Good Jazzin'
