Can you believe that DJML was started, when , back in about 1995? I must have joined around ?97! And, thanks for your comments on the video I sent. As I said, I felt we were a bit ?stiff? at the beginning (1000 in the audience & 2,000 couldn?t get tickets!), knowing everything was being taped, and all, but there are some ?magic moments? when we are actually playing real Jazz?listening to one another, and just having fun, which is what it should all be about! There were a few glitches there, but we managed to not train wreck! Never happens on smaller gigs, but the larger ones can still bring on the nerves, even after all these years. (I started with Vince Saunder?s original South Frisco Jazz Band in Huntington Beach, CA, in 1957!)<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"> <br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Dan asked if we have to pay a type of ASCAP charge. In this concert, it was at an auditorium run by a Spanish bank (& one of the richest families in Spain) who regularly put on free concerts at their central Madrid auditorium, and they took care of all of that. Otherwise, no, we don?t usually get bothered by that sort of thing here. No, there is no musician?s union in Spain to speak of. No, we don?t ever use tuba or banjo. Our rhythm section tends to flow a bit more towards swing Jazz, rather than earlier styles, and since we have never, ever limited anyone on style or song preferences, we are still together after all these years. <br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"> <br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">This concert, by the way, was supposed to be about Jazz from N.O. to Chicago, therefore songs like our very popular Pink Panther couldn?t be in the list of songs for this one. I did include the Elvis song ?Are You Lonesome?, as it was actually a popular song from the late 1920s. We also play a lot of Duke, Basie, Glenn Miller, etc songs, so tuba & banjo don?t really fit in.<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"> <br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">There are now a number of younger bands playing the earlier style of Jazz in Spain, some using tuba. I do have a problem with balance, though, when I close my eyes, and my eyes keep closing when I play & sing! It?s a real drag, as it really blows my concentration. I count myself as being very lucky, plus, I?ve got the support of young Yehven on trumpet, who took over our trumpet spot when our trumpeter of some 35 yrs passed away, about 10 yrs ago. I have a lot of fun ?talking? with our horns with Yehven!
