Hi Jim et al:
I am a habitual lurker and am glad that the DJML is still alive. I joined when Peter Lovric was the moderator.

Don Ingle is one member who is greatly missed.

His first hand (or second hand from his dad) went way back to Bix...what a resource!

Certainly Bob Ringwald was an anchor of this group. I am indebted to him. When I needed musicians to play with me for my daughter's funeral in LA, Bob recommended CJ Sams on tuba and Corey Gemme on tbone. The occasion went well with their help.

Another member with a vast knowledge of recordings and jazz info is Bill Haesler.

I saw Jack Wiard a few months ago and Jack said that Bill is doing well.

By the way Dan Zeilinger (RIP 10/31/21) has a great YouTube program https://www.youtube.com/c/TradJazzToday/videos

I highly recommend this show. He interviews many of today's trad jazz stars. I think Dan had a premonition to accomplish this before his time ended.

Sincerely,

Art Wood

SF Bay Area

On Sat, Dec 3, 2022 at 8:31 AM, jim@kashprod.com

<jim@kashprod.com> wrote:

<!--

I see we have a newish member (to me, anyway!), Andrew Homzy, who might stir those more learned members into life, to answer his enquiries. I, for one, have never dealt much with the history of what I do, other than listening to those I was impressed/influenced by. I get my kicks from just playing this stuff, but respect those that wish to dig deeper.

Good to hear from old friends Norman Vickers, Phil Wilkin, Jack Wiard, and Ron L’Herault. I see another name I didn’t recognize, James Converse. Last correspondence, I believe, on djml was in April when Patrick Skiffington wrote about Jim Maihack´s passing. A bit earlier, in March, there was a short bout on djml, but little since. Maybe we can keep it going a bit now. I can’t add a lot, other than what my band is up to.

Here in Madrid, we recently played a private dinner party at a Tablao de Flamenco (Flamenco Club). That was a first for our band, and it was fun playing in a joint where the acoustics were so good. Plus, we had those great straight backed straw & wood chairs behind us (that the Flamenco people sit bolt upright on!). One of those chairs served well for my “foot stunt” I mentioned earlier. By the way, I copied that trick from Bob Havens, so I tend to refute any type of complaint that it is just “circus”! If someone as good as Havens was did it, that’s good enough for me. Besides, audiences love it. I can manage a fairly musical solo with the slide between my toes, so there you have it!

We are in for two nites next week at Madrid’s most famed jazz club: Café Central. It’s right in the center of the touristy part of town. We’ve played there since they opened their doors some 35 yrs ago. They managed to get through the pandemic lay off, and are doing well. We do 2 one hour concerts each nite, with an hour in between when they serve us a dinner. Nice gig!

Jim

_______________________________________________
To unsubscribe or change your e-mail preferences for the Dixieland Jazz Mailing list, or to find the online archives, please visit:

http://ml.islandnet.com/mailman/listinfo/dixielandjazz

Dixielandjazz mailing list
Dixielandjazz@ml.islandnet.com
