Yes, I agree, Ron, that FB is difficult to follow as conversations get “bounced” down the list as new inputs arrive. It’s not really set up for the likes of some of our “conversations” on our list. However, I have found FB to be invaluable for attracting audiences to our gigs. Back in the early days, we were at the same club once a week (that lasted for 25 yrs!), so people just automatically knew where they could go to hear us (& people would seek us out at that club to book us for other things). Now, though, with gigs more spread out, and in different locations, something like FaceBook is great. We have a page “Canal Street Jazz Band Madrid” on FB, and II usually pay for about 5 or 6 day ads costing around 4 or 5 Euros to reach around 4,000 people. I decide on the area, age group, type of people, male/female, etc. for the ads. I find a short video & a short text works the best, making sure the link for buying on-line tickets is included. I don’t “friend” anyone, nor do I use FB for other matters, but as a “crowd chaser”, I have found it to be very useful.

I also tell people, as they buy our cds after each gig to join our “Whatsapp” chat group. I know you guys in the U.S. don’t go in much for Whatsapp, but that’s a real shame. It is a great tool. I run the group, and only allow people to post things about our group. A lot of folks post videos & photos they have taken at our gigs, and then I use those in our ads on FB. On this group I can tell our closest fans what we are up to.

True, we can’t post pictures or videos on the mailing list, but we can post links to videos. Here’s a video a fan shot at our last Saturday noontime gig (and posted minutes after the gig on our Whatsapp group. It’s the end bit of “Running Wild”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80q7gdvwlJI We do a 1 hour and a quarter show. We squeeze in about 10 songs, and one or two encores in that time. Good fun!

This month we have the noontime gig on a Sunday, followed by Wed and Thurs nite at another club. That club has two shows a nite (at 8pm & 10pm) with a different audience for each show, so that means close to 40 songs for the total of the two nights. We could play the same concert for all 4 concerts, but I much prefer playing different tunes each set. Keeps everyone on their toes, and prompts new ideas as we play. I refuse to get in a rut!!!

Jim
