<P><FONT size=+1><FONT face=Arial>The tempo is rather odd for the tune. However,
the musicians who are playing make it work. With George Shearing and Toots
Thielman (and the rhythm section) backing like they do on this tune, Peggy Lee
could sing the "Beer Barrel Polka" and it would sound good. Listen to the pitch
in the wide tonal range she displays on this tune. Absolutely
beautiful!</FONT></FONT></P>

on youtube. It was delightful!!</FONT></FONT></P>

Despite this, Peggy has a grasp of the song that works to an extent, as if she’s singing in another room. As one commenter wrote, "Listen more carefully...the pathos is there in the tone and vibrato in her throat.” Full disclosure—I think that, among white jazz vocalists, Peggy Lee was the most moving, subtle, and skillful interpreter of lyrics. Plus, she was drop dead beautiful.

If you could listen to Peggy Lee's version of 'Blue Prelude' with the George Shearing quintet on Capitol you would perhaps be persuaded to leave the song alone forever!
