Though I spent little face-to-face time with Tom, we were in very close contact over the years as we exchanged thoughts on New Orleans musicians and music. I was grateful and flattered that he wrote two books that took my volume on postwar jazz forward to the present. He also wrote kindly about my late brother Don, a reedman like himself. His passing is a great loss to the jazz community and the larger fellowship of just plain good people. And to the field go archaeology, as I learned from the splendidly written obituary. Amazing. Thanks for that.
