I was amazed he was self-taught! My friend, Manny Wise, a popular drummer in the Boston area was visiting his wife in the Cape Cod hospital and dropped in on Ruby to say Hello, and Ruby still had the sarcastic edge. Manny complimented him on his work on a Tony Bennett album and Ruby said, "Yeah, but the recording bastards avoided me during my prime years when I could have used the money!". Amazing how someone with such a crusty personality could sound so sweet and gentle in his playing. Incidentally, if you visit Beverly for the reunion, be sure to tune in on WBOQ @ 104.9 FM. It's a Beverly station that plays great jazz all day and night. It reminds me of the old Norm Nathan broadcasts. Maybe we'll get together?
