I watched Jim’s concert. Absolutely great. I uploaded it in the FB page of the Geneva Boogie 4tet. I realise I forgot to sign my earlier post. To give some European ambiance I added the Youtube link of our Geneva concert at the Fête de la musique of June.
With regards

And, thanks for your comments on the video I sent. As I said, I felt we were a bit “stiff” at the beginning (1000 in the audience & 2,000 couldn’t get tickets!), knowing everything was being taped, and all, but there are some “magic moments” when we are actually playing real Jazz…listening to one another, and just having fun, which is what it should all be about! There were a few glitches there, but we managed to not train wreck! Never happens on smaller gigs, but the larger ones can still bring on the nerves, even after all these years. (I started with Vince Saunder’s original South Frisco Jazz Band in Huntington Beach, CA, in 1957!)

In this concert, it was at an auditorium run by a Spanish bank (& one of the richest families in Spain) who regularly put on free concerts at their central Madrid auditorium, and they took care of all of that. Otherwise, no, we don’t usually get bothered by that sort of thing here. No, there is no musician’s union in Spain to speak of. No, we don’t ever use tuba or banjo. Our rhythm section tends to flow a bit more towards swing Jazz, rather than earlier styles, and since we have never, ever limited anyone on style or song preferences, we are still together after all these years.

> This concert, by the way, was supposed to be about Jazz from N.O. to Chicago, therefore songs like our very popular Pink Panther couldn’t be in the list of songs for this one. I did include the Elvis song “Are You Lonesome”, as it was actually a popular song from the late 1920s. We also play a lot of Duke, Basie, Glenn Miller, etc songs, so tuba & banjo don’t really fit in.

> As for being able to last an hour concert standing, we normally play 1 hr 20 minutes, and I really don’t like to sit down to play. I do have a problem with balance, though, when I close my eyes, and my eyes keep closing when I play & sing! It’s a real drag, as it really blows my concentration. I count myself as being very lucky, plus, I’ve got the support of young Yehven on trumpet, who took over our trumpet spot when our trumpeter of some 35 yrs passed away, about 10 yrs ago. I have a lot of fun “talking” with our horns with Yehven! His flugelhorn is really, really nice.

> Glad to see you're still playing and swinging! I'm impressed (and a little DE-pressed but envious) of your ability at age 83 to stand up and play for an hour. I'm 82 and my knees have mostly given out, but i can still play tuba in local dixie and polka bands (but sitting down).
> I haven't watched the whole concert yet, just the first two tunes, but i'll get to it later (gotta eat lunch and watch some bad football on TV). A few questions about playing in Madrid:
> 1) do you have to worry about paying ASCAP or BMI (or whatever) fees for the non-PublicDomain songs your band plays? Here in Austin TX some concert venues ask the bands to play only PD songs;
> 2) is there a musicians' union in Madrid (or Spain or Europe)? Does it matter, or work?
> 3) do you ever use a tuba player instead of string bass in your band? Are there any good jazz tuba-pickers around?
> 4) If i decide i can't stand the forthcoming Trump administration and want to move to Portugal (where my nephew can get me in more easily), do you know what cities (like Porto or Lisbon etc.) have jazz bands playing OKOM?
> Keep up the good work, and may you play forever (or as long as you want to)!

Nevertheless, Jazz is still alive in Madrid where I have been performing since 1966. Our band, Canal Street Jazz Band, is now celebrating it’s 57th yr performing, and although the gigs began to lessen with the financial crisis in 2008, and even more after Covid, we still get one to 2 gigs a month. We’ve maybe fallen into the dreaded “too respected to even possibly book” arena, even though we are very adaptable to costs & situations! I even was presented as a “legend of Spanish Jazz” during a concert when I substituted a trombonist at a gig with visiting New Orlean’s drummer Joe Lastie. I’m only a “legend” because I’m 83, and been at it for a long time! :>

> Anyway, the reason for sending this post was to give anyone that might be interested the chance to see a concert we did in Madrid in early October. The sound guy took about ½ the concert to get his act together, and actually, the crowd (non Jazz folk) were the same. I feel, also, that the band was “being careful” up to past the ½ way mark, only really playing Hot Jazz after that! Still, it’s a nicely put together set, although, I somehow chose tunes were the bass & drums are not well shown off.
