I've been given a 2 CD package collection of Chris Barber music which comes
with an extensive booklet included. Strangely enough, there is very little
of what I would recognize as the Chris Barber "sound". This is a curious
collection of guest stars, or Barber guesting with other stars, such as:
Eric Clapton, Lonnie Donegan, Rory Gallagher, Edmond Hall, Jools Holland,
Mark Knoppler, Van Morrison, Albert Nicholas, Muddy Waters, etc., etc.

As one might guess from a few of the above names, these cds are mostly
blues. Disk 1 is exclusively blues music, and guitar based bands. I found
it interesting that Barber was as comfortable in the "guitar keys" (B, A,
etc.) as he is improvising in what wind instrument based bands play in (Bb,
F, Ab, etc.) Of course, Barber was closely associated in the early days
with the likes of Lonnie Donegan & the Skiffle crowd, which were string
based, so just to get by he would have had to get used to those keys. Disk
2 gets a bit more Dixie, and is mostly in keys we brass players are more
accustomed to.

Anyway, all in all, it is an interesting collection to have, if anyone else
is interested. www.lastmusic.co.uk <http://www.lastmusic.co.uk> LMCD214.
