He congratulated me, really I suppose Johnny Griffin, for little John's 
comment reported to him, as made to Archie Shepp
-- "the world might be in a terrible state, but that's no reason to take 
it out on the music!"

Taking it out on the music is the very opposite of what Bob did, and 
terrible as things might be it's a big thing to enhance a capacity among 
people to tolerate better what shouldn't be, but regrettably is. And 
indeed to contribute to and increase what should be. We had little 
immediate contact, but I am grateful to and for the man,
