[Dixielandjazz] Dixielandjazz Digest, Vol 207, Issue 17

I remember the accordion line from George Shearing, except in his version the gentleman could play it, could have played it, but refrained....He was being interviewed by Melvyn (now Lord) Bragg, another of those BBC beggards who mispronounces non-English names, Bragg being it seems an enthusiast for the squeezebox and an admirer of the recording on which Shearing played expertly while the actual distinction of Leonard Feather as a blues pianist was demonstrated...
Stan Tracey was certainly a gentleman. Given Stan's comments on some other early work it was probably all to the good that he never found himself being piloted through New York by any of those several cab drivers who on hearing an English accent started to enthuse about the big band of Ted Heath.  I do recall Stan having things to say of his time with that Heath (not the Politician!) which suggested he might rather have preferred the breastplate of Jack Emblow, Clifton Chenier, indeed Bengt Hallberg (whose stride piano on "Hallberg's Happiness" I must give another listen after a long time -- some nice cuckoo ragtime too: but I've never heard the late lamented Bengt's squeezeboxing;  Jack Emblow with Martin Taylor and Dave O'Higgins I do know and revere).

ciao, Steve!Robert

A gentleman is someone who owns an accordion but does not play it.
