I play tenor banjo with standard viola (C-G-D-A) tuning.
To raise everything up a fifth to violin tuning you are going to have to use
such small gauge strings, especially on the first string, that you are going
to break them frequently as you play. If you don't use very light gauge
strings, your first string is going to break more often than not as you tune
up.
Really, do try the standard tuning for a while. There are several home study
books available. Jurgen Kulus of Germany arranged to reprint the one by
Harry Reser. These home study courses use the "G" (treble) clef, not any
strange moveable "C" clef for viola. Tenor banjo band parts are all on the
treble clef, popular song piano/vocal music has the melody part on the
treble clef, and the slash notation for chords doesn't care what clef you
use.
