[Dixielandjazz] Opinion: standing or sitting

My thoughts on standing vs sitting. I like to stand because I like to move around and it is easier to breathe. Most of the guys I play with sit though. The "stand for solos" concept is a nice idea, keeping audience attention focused. ISTR that this is how the Preservation Hall bands did it in the 70s, unless someone just could not easily stand. I also like high stools. You can rest your butt without completely sitting down or you can sit while others solo, etc.

It is true anatomically that you can breathe better standing up and at church, for instance, I stand all the time when I play. But, my knees make it less enjoyable and less comfortable. And, sitting while practicing, can push you to develop more air support. So, of course, it’s certainly possible to do a great performance while sitting.

I was interested to hear the comments about Happy because both of my concert community bands have a good arrangement of it and I enjoy and embellish it a bit.

That's how I feel. I feel like comfort equals better playing.

If you are more comfortable sitting, you will play better that way. Let
those two stand as "flankers" to the rest of the band. Or sit in two rows
with the standees flanking the back line.

I have heard many bands in the New Orleans area, and almost all of them sit.
As an audience member, I don't care about that; I care how they sound.

So, again, if you are more comfortable sitting, sit. You will play better
than if you stand.

Unless each one is covered in its own
plastic shroud, two or more wire coat
hangers in a dark closet will breed.
