Dear Listers:

I have received word from San Antonio that Jim Cullum, Jr. died today after
a fall at his home.  He was 77.  Needless to say, this is stunning news.  It
is the passing of a major jazz figure, one of the most successful
bandleaders in the history of the form.

Regards,

Dave Stoddard

https://syncopatedtimes.com/san-antonio-jazz-legend-jim-cullum-has-died/

It's been a very rough week for important musicians.

As someone on the younger end of the spectrum (40), and who follows the
younger players, nearly all of the serious ones found their way to San
Antonio to play with Jim Cullum at some point. Many others learned a lot of
history from the radio show, which was on the air in nearly every major
city in the US. And he was still encouraging new acts locally. The Dirty
River Dixie Band in San Antonio formed at a nearby college after seeing one
of his gigs just a couple of years ago and they already have enough legs to
have done a few gigs in the northeast this June.
