>>>Ted Shafer first formed the Jelly Roll Jazz Band in Los Angeles in 1959, with an 8 piece King Oliver/Lu Watters style 2 trumpet band.
With the exception of buying some charts from him via email, all my contact with Ted was in Los Angeles, when the eight-piece band played in West LA.  I spent many a Sunday afternoon listening, and I seem to recall sitting in on second banjo occasionally.  I got to be friends with the regular guys, especially tuba player Pete Kier. There was a Sunday when there was no piano player, so I sat down and played my two-left-hands thing: bass notes in the left hand, chords with the right hand.  We reached a place where there was a piano solo and everybody yelled "Take It!"   I managed to fumble a few mostly-right notes, and it remains to this day my only public piano solo.  Ted was a good guy, and you always miss good guys. Maurie Walker
