[Dixielandjazz] Copying LPs to CDs

So far, my process is going well. Several LPs have been converted to CDs
which I'm enjoying white driving or just at home. The only problem I've
found is a strange one.

My process is to get an LP into the computer by using Audacity's "what you
hear feature'. That enables me to capture an entire side of an LP.

Next, I look for pops and clicks and eliminate them using Adobe's Audition
software. Audition allows me to greatly expand the audio file so that I can
see a pop and its wide enough that I can easily delete it.

Next, I find each of the individual tracks on that side and store them by
tune name  and its position on the LP.
For instance, the first tune of the first side of a Teddy Wilson LP is "That
Old Feeling". It's file is stored as "01 That Old Feeling". The next tune is
than "02 Tune name". And so on. By the way, when I add it to the burner
program, the number is removed. 

It is a lot of work, but it's worth it to me.

The only problem I'm having is that sometimes when I add the tune to my
compilation, it contains ALL of the music on the side instead of just the
one song.

I've not been able to consistently get just the one song. I looks as if it
does but it's actually the entire track!!! I'm at my wit's end trying to
solve this problem.

I wonder if anyone else has seen this problem? Has anyone got a solution?

In basic terms, normalization is the process which makes certain that the
sounds of all of the tracks have the same sound levels. This enables one to
listen to a CD without having to touch the volume control knob for each
track on the CD.

I have a deep dark secret to confess.  I don't consider myself a collector
of recordings, mainly because I never organized/cataloged.   When I was
about 6, I saw my first wind up record player, which I acquired when I was
13, in 1960, and which I still own.   Even then I knew I didn't like rock
and
roll and did like big band music.  Getting the Grafonola and its records
helped me discover teens and 20s pop and jazz which I immediately took to.
I started buying LPs as a teen, and by accident found radio stations that
played jazz, Ed Beach was on one and Ray Smith's Jazz Decades on another.
I still amass records based on whether or not I like the band and/or the
music, but mostly based on whether or not I like the music.

I began my record collecting at an early age. My parents gave me a record
player when I was a kid and I began to buy records. I paid by a record store
to organize a collection the store had purchased. I asked that I'd be paid
by a small percentage of recordings from that collection. The store agree
and so began my desire to have my own 78s. This was at a time when there
were only 78s. Of course, they came in two sizes - 10 inch or 12 inch
diameters. Naturally, one could also buy used 78s.

How did you get interested in collecting recordings?

I've used much the same process but never did the normalization.  I'm not
sure what that is or why you would do that.   I burn with Nero, so once I've
saved each track under its song title, I just add them to Nero burning page,
make sure I've kept the tracks in the same order and tell Nero to burn the
CD, usually at a slower burn rate.  I think it makes a longer lasting, less
error prone CD.

Yes. I've saved each file as a wave file. My process is as follows:

1. copy the entire side of an LP as a wave file using Audacity.

	a. store that side in a folder giving it the name of the LP
(Example: Jimmy Witherspoon at Monterey - Side 1)

2. visually scan the wave file to find where each tune in the "Jimmy
Witherspoon at Monterey - Side 1 "begins and ends.

	a. zoom in so that I can easily see each tune on Side 1

3. copy each tune on the "Jimmy Witherspoon at Monterey - Side 1" and store
it in another folder as a wave file. 

     	a. Name that wave file by the tune's actual name (Ain't Nobody's
Business). 

4. Bring each of these songs, one at a time, into Adobe Audition.

	a. normalize each tune to -1

5. Save normalized tune by its actual name and/or artist as a wave file.

It's a bit of work - that's for certain. However, I now have that music on a
CD to play in my car or in the house.

What concerns me, is that not all of the tunes on these CDs play well. Some
do and some do not. I have not been able to get all of these tunes to play
on a CD.

It's rather hit and miss.

I don't mind the work. But I'd like to know how to improve my success rate.
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi;

In trying to copy an LP to a CD, I've captured a side of an LP. My next
task, is to select each individual tune on from the capture of a side of the
LP. To date, my progress has been limited. While I've been able to select
each individual tune, Adobe Audition complains that many of the tunes are
corrupted when I try to add them to Nero for burning.

Any suggestions?
