------------------------------------------------------------

Doors open at 12 noon so come early to get a good seat.

See you there.
Jazz on the Wireless
There has been a lot happening in jazz radio recently.

Firstly, I'd like to thank Walter Love of BBC Ulster for an hour long
interview with me, which he recorded here in my studio in Long Sutton. (see
photo below)

We talked about my career going back to the beginning and into the 80s,
working with many of the American soloists through to the present.

Walter played seven tracks from across the decades and the whole thing was
a fun experience and a great honour for me.

It was broadcast on 27th May, but is available on BBC IPlayer for another
couple of weeks.

The Late Paul Barnes

Sadly Barnsey has hung up his headphones and resigned from the BBC and
ended an era of wonderful and diverse music on BBC Eastern counties
stations. There are few presenters who have the breadth and depth of
knowledge possessed by the likes of Paul and Walter Love and for the BBC to
allow him to walk without putting up a fight is a sad reflection on the way
Auntie is run these days.

The replacement show does not do it for me, and whilst the presenter is a a
pleasant and friendly host, the music is too narrowly focussed on what I
call 'modern' big band music. I doubt we will hear Lee Wiley, Johnny Dodds,
Miff Mole or King Oliver very often, if at all.

Now You Has Jazz, Jazz, Jazz on the Sound of Spitfire

For those who mourn the demise of Paul's show, I can offer an hour of real
hot jazz on my internet radio show, broadcast from Spalding. Tune in at 9pm
BST (20:00 utc/gmt) on Monday evening. I'll be doing a programme devoted
the the great New Orleans clarinettist, Johnny Dodds.

Julian Stringle Quartet

Julian's quartet for this National Jazz Archive fundraiser features
Canadian guitar virtuoso Dominic Ashworth, long-time musical associate Andy
Cleyndert on bass, and drummer Rod Brown.

Julian Marc Stringle plays clarinet, alto and tenor saxes and sings, but
the clarinet is his passion. He is recognised as Europe's most stylish
performer on the instrument and has won several British Jazz awards, with
his highly melodic music, unique sound and phenomenal technique. He plays
in and leads a wide range of groups, playing swing, modern, Latin,
jazz-funk and more.

Award-winning Canadian guitar virtuoso Dominic Ashworth is an active
freelance player. He regularly plays alongside Julian both as a duo and in
Julian’s Dream Band. He teaches guitar at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

On bass is Julian’s long-time musical associate Andrew Cleyndert,
well-known to jazz audiences for the past 30 years. He has played and
toured with the cream of UK and international musicians.

In the drum chair is fine Kent-based drummer Rod Brown, drummer of choice
for many top vocalists.

The concert is the second of a series of events throughout 2018 to
celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Archive.
