Dear Marek,
It was definitely sent, as I received it.
And I was interested in the tune, as you purported it to be an Ellington rarity.
"The Girl in My Dreams Tries to Look Like You."
I have never heard of it.
Then up pops Steve Voce saying "It probably means something that I've always thought.
That you [Marek} don't actually exist."
Mmmmm.
I know you exist, as I receive emails from you. Or do I?
I have never actually met you to prove it.
Or Steve for that matter, even though I have been reading his writings for years.
So what about "The Girl in My Dreams Tries to Look Like You"?
Yes, IT exists.
I found a copy of Duke's recording on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVu5QkQP3ZE
(Nice tune and lyrics too.)
Then found an image of the Victor 27326 label confirming the vocalist to be Herb Jeffries.
Recorded in Chicago on 28 December 1940, according to Brian Rust.
And it is in my collection. I've just checked.
It is purported to be composed (words and music) by Mercer Ellington.
It was. Confirmed by the Copyright Entry on Jan. 5, 1945. So that that is not in doubt either.
Cheers,
Bill. (Who feels OK on this sunny Sydney, Australia winter's morning. So I also exist, at the moment of writing.)
