Sarah Spencer, described as "*one of the exciting, new, young breed of
traditional jazz players and the hottest tenor saxophonist on the Jazz
scene today*," makes her debut appearance at St John's Arts Centre (St
John's Arts Centre, St John's Walk Market St, Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ) at 8pm
on Thursday 30th March.
Sarah's creed has always been to "play it Hot and Dirty." She started
playing clarinet at the age of 8 and tenor sax at 15, later taking up the
baritone, alto and soprano saxophones.
Arriving on the British traditional jazz scene at 18; Sarah quickly spread
her wings - was the youngest visitor to play in Preservation Hall, New
Orleans at 19; and formed the first of her own bands at 20.
A move to the USA brought her global fame appearing at numerous top
festivals with many legendary figures from the New Orleans jazz world. She
has regularly returned to the UK playing triumphant concerts including the
prestigious Purcell Room, one of London's premier serious music venues.
A poll winner in the cradle of jazz, New Orleans, Sarah has been recognised
in several categories, including "Favourite New Artiste", "Favourite Tenor
Saxophonist".
New Orleans record producer, George H Buck Jr. of Jazzology Records said*,
"Sarah plays tenor sax in the true New Orleans style of that instrument....
It is nice to hear a lady who has assimilated so much of the New Orleans
feeling and tradition."*
In addition to her instrumental skills, Sarah is a fine blues vocalist.
Completing the line-up will be top Essex piano man, Tim Huskisson, a
popular visitor to the venue, Harlow bassist, Keith Donald and ex Harlow
drummin' man, John Petters.
The concert starts at 8PM and admission is £10.
A High Resolution Jpeg is available upon request.
Keep swinging,
John Petters
