Tonight (technically, last night, as it's already past midnight here), a
friend and I went to hear the Isradixie and the Avraham Felder Big Band at
the Shablul in Tel-Aviv. Sonce this was a celebration of the American
Independence day, the band members sported ties with the American flag.
Uncharacteristically for Israel, the show started less than 10 minutes past
9PM - the scheduled time - with professor Nahum Perefrikovich laying a
ragtime medley. Nahum, an excellent pianist, came back later for the big
band part.  The band treated us to a straight hour of good, swinging music;
for a few Armstrong associated numbers it was joined by Armstrong
impersonator Nissim Yemini.
After an hour of playing the band took a short break, during which the big
band assembled. It started with several swinging Ellington standards, the
entire reed section playing clarinets on Creole Love Call (and later on
Moonlight serenade). What a pleasure hearing a bass clarinet live,
something one does not encounter too often. The big band featured two
singers - Dany Sagi and a female singer Ella Tadmor on several numbers.
The repertoire consisted of big band standards, and the band really swung!
As the Brits say - a jolly good show!
Cheers
