Just back from Shay Brenner's concert - a tribute to Jewish jazzmen from
Prague murdered by the Germans in Auschwitz. The concert featured
standards, original compositions and Czech numbers arranged by Weiss for a
Chech band and recorded thereby. Mr. Weiss was 25 when he was sent to the
gas chamber.
The concert went pretty well, even though Shay reverted to playing scales
rather than improvising on the melody. All the members of the quartet
performed well, with special praise to the drummer Leon Habib, a real
accompanist who knows his job inside out.
Unfortunately, the event was not well attended, the small auditorium at the
Felicja Blumental Music Centre less than half full. I hope things will
improve when people are back from their holidays (this is a holiday season
here, the last day whereof falls on Monday).
Cheers
