May 5, 1942 - Oct. 22, 2015 Roger passed away on October 22, 2015 at the age of 73 after a long illness. He was born May 5, 1942 in Sanger, CA, and raised in Fresno. Roger moved to Sacramento in 1966 where he lived the remainder of his life. Roger is  survived by his wife Jean, the love of his life, his children Daniel Krum (Lanette), Alison Buxie (John), Erin Mahaffy, brothers Donald (Sandra, nephew Phillip and niece Sarah) and Thomas (Marsha), and seven grandchildren, Ryley, Mason, John, Alex, Zelia, Quincy, and Sophia. Roger earned a BS in Psychology with extensive studies in music from CSU Fresno and an MS in Counseling from CSU Sacramento. He worked for the State of California for 24 years, primarily in supervisory and administrative positions, plus 18 years as Executive Director of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society which included serving as Director of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee when it was the largest traditional jazz festival in the world. He retired in 2006. Roger served as President of the Sacramento Goal Rushers (a SF 49ers Booster Club), the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, and the American Federation of Jazz Societies, plus Chairperson of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. He also served on the Board of Directors for Race for the Arts, the Arts and Business Council, and Business Volunteers for the Arts. Roger enjoyed many years as a seasonal seats holder for the San Francisco 49ers, coaching softball, attending plays at the Sacramento Theatre Company, Ashland Shakespeare Festival, and horse races. His passion was traditional jazz, playing violin at age five and taking up the bass as a teenager. He played bass for over 20 years with the Fulton Street Jazz Band. The family wishes to give special thanks to his care provider and friend Claude Koi and to the compassionate and caring staff at DaVita Sunset Dialysis and Kaiser Roseville Hospital. At his request there will be no funeral services.
