THE WORLD’S FINEST APPLES ANNOUNCE CALIFORNIA TOUR DATES

The World’s Finest Apples have announced a series of California tour dates
in support of their new album, The Bunnyfriend Colloquium.

The World’s Finest Apples are representative of a current of younger
musicians devoted to the hot jazz styles of the 1920s and 30s, finding
inspiration in the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton
and Django Reinhardt. New York City, Los Angeles, and New Orleans have all
developed thriving scenes of the old music performed with a renewed
vitality by a new generation of players.

The August tour will feature The Apples performing across California with
stops scheduled in San Diego, Los Angeles, Berkeley, Ventura, the Central
Coast, Sacramento, and Eureka. The venues range from swing dances to more
intimate concert settings, and even a clinic on early-swing music.

The occasion for the tour is to celebrate the release of The Bunnyfriend
Colloquium, The Apples sophomore album following 2011’s Unchaperoned. The
years between releases have seen some changes for the band, which
originally formed in Sacramento, California in 2011. Founding member and
lead guitarist Nahum Zdybel has relocated to Los Angeles, and Molly Reeves
(of the New Orleans Jazz Vipers and her own Red Skunk band) has assumed the
rhythm guitar chair. With Accordionist Keith Penney living in Livermore—a
small suburb of the Bay Area—the band members span the country. The title
of the new record refers to the reconvening of The Apples in New Orleans
this January at Reeves’s Bunnyfriend studios. Zdybel and Penney travelled
to New Orleans to rehearse, arrange, and record the entire record over a
few short days with Reeves and bassist Kellen Garcia—another Sacramento
expat now living in New Orleans.

The Bunnyfriend Colloquium finds The Apples in fine form, exploring
material associated with Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhardt,
Count Basie, and Fats Waller as well as an original contributed by Penney.
The group navigates a precarious balance between clever whimsy and deft
musicianship throughout. Humor is at the forefront in the groups rendering
of Twelfth Street Rag, while Livermore is For Lovers sees the group
unafraid to tug at the boundaries of the style, tapping into the intrinsic
experimentalism of those early days of jazz. Throughout the record the
group swings exuberantly with an almost punk sensibility, but doesn’t shy
away from delicate and subtle beauty in their improvisations.

The touring lineup of the group will consist of Nahum Zdybel and Molly
Reeves on guitars, Keith Penney on Accordion, and New Orleans native Joshua
Gouzy (also of The New Orleans Jazz Vipers) on upright bass. A complete
listing of dates and venues can be found at www.theworldsfinestapples.com.
