If he wasn't the greatest trumpet player in the history of jazz, he was the
second greatest. However he drank himself to death at 28. Happy people don't
do that.
A great memoir of Bix and his times is Eddie Condon's book, "We Called It
Music." The portrait of Bix's last days is shattering. Condon was also an
alcoholic and recognized Bix as one, though Condon himself made it to age
68.
