We really tried a lot of different things over the 20+ years at Friday
Night Music. It depended a lot on who would show up and what instruments
were brought - it could vary a lot from week to week. Usually people would
step up to "Produce" a cut, pick people to join them in the recording room
and present some sort of plan or structure as a starting point. Sometimes
the Producer could conduct with hand or voice commands but the musicians
didn't always exactly follow. Other times it could just be 1,2,3, Go! The
producer would name the cut, sometimes with artwork, on a dry-erase board.
When the session was over, a picture of the board became the label for the
cassette box.
I personally liked to produce instrumental duets, or sometimes spontaneous
poetry with certain pre-chosen words that would trigger the production of
certain sounds.
