[Dixielandjazz] Monk and Pee Wee; other one-of-a-kinds? [WARNING: SPF validation unavailable]

Fair enough, Charlie.
Lester had so many imitators that it drove him mad, I think.
There was a clarinet player in the Missourians called William Thornton Blue who had a very recognizable and unique style that no one - as far as I know - has ever been able to emulate. - But the Missourians didn't record much, so he's not very well known.
Cheers

I guess I had in mind players who, though singularly great, were SO individual that they didn't produce an imitable style or virtually establish a genre, like Louis, Bix, Bird, Pres, Bud, etc, did. "Eccentric" might be the word, shorn of its negative connotations. "Jazz mutation" might be the phrase, again, in good sense, in that others did't "evolve" from them. Nothing's at stake here, just a little thought experiment I wanted to toss out.

>> Monk did a concert playing several numbers with Pee Wee Russell. Does anyone know if it's on YouTube? I couldn't find it, maybe for lack of searching skills. That struck me as a fitting duo, since both are one-of-a-kind players, very eccentric and unique within their traditions. Any help would be appreciated.

>> This leads me to thinking....are there others in jazz who have been so distinctive that they're immediately recognizable, and not "imitable" by others without sounding like outright musical plagiarists? Error Garner, surely. Boyce Brown, maybe? Joe Rushton comes close. The under-rated Bill Rank? This is a very subjective game, but I'm interested in others' ideas.
