Often, during my daily practice, I will put on a record & have a blow along
with the recorded band. This is something I've done since I was a kid, and
I learned how to improvise using that technic. I've played with the best
(during practice!). :>

Well, today, I chose a cd Jim Beebe sent to me: Franz Jackson "Snag It"
with Jim Beebe's Chicago Jazz (1990 on Delmark Records).

This cd is reminding me of how important it is to be hot when playing our
kind of jazz. I actually took a break from practice to write this, because
it dawned on me how important it is. We usually say it has to swing, but I'd
like to add that it has to also be hot to be good. Meaning? Meaning,
putting everything you've got into the music during a performance, and using
drive in all the right places.

These guys do just that!

Jim
