Dear Bob,
The source for that information seems to have originated with the 1999 Leonard Feather - Ira Gitler book 'The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz'.
Included in the book's biography for Johnny Guarnieri is the following:
"A master of stride piano, he comp.more than 3,500 pieces in his lifetime including a musical show, What A Perfect Business.
Book: From Ragtime To Tatum (Schirmer).
CDs: w. B. Goodman (Col.); Shaw...etc."
Extensive googling failed (for me anyway) to turn up the book and we know about the CDs.
Floyd Levin, who spent time with Guarnieri, who worked in California in later years, makes no reference to the musical or the book in own book 'Classic Jazz. A Personal View of the Music and the Musicians'.
But Floyd, or someone, may have done so in obituaries after Guarnieri died unexpectedly in 1985.
However, he did correct the number of Guarnieri compositions to a more manageable 650.
So far as the musical is concerned, "What A Perfect Business" was indeed copyrighted.
A musical comedy: story, book & lyrics by Martin Silberston, music by John Guarnieri.
I V. 2 acts. © Martin Silberston: John Guarnieri; 26 Jan 66; DU64722.
What a coincidence!
Today is 26 January 2014 and we are celebrating Australia Day here.
I can only speculate that, at the time of his death, Johnny Guarnieri had submitted a manuscript for a book to Schirmer, but it was never published.
Not that I can find.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
