I'm also on several web-based forums and I find them awkward to use since
the email notice I receive isn't the real message, it is only an alert to
say "click here to get the real message" which is often inconvenient (not
wanting to open yet another tab -- can't complain too much about the
web-based aspect since my gmail is also web-based, but it's the loading up
of another page that's the barrier)

also on a forum, each topic gets its own entry in the master index on the
first page, and that quickly fills up into a large un-ordered tangle; with
a mailing list archive such as yahoogroups or gmane the messages are in
reverse order by date, but threaded by the subject; I find that a much more
natural method.

Someone mentioned not wanting to use Google Groups, however Google Groups
is really the old usenet groups which are really very much like email and
will also behave like email for most practical purposes.  You do need a
gmail ID to get in, but you aren't constrained to the Google interface.
 Mind you, I haven't used usenet/ggroups for quite a while, so things may
have changed since.
